BEHIND THE LENS

I was born in Soviet Russia, and have been living in Los Angeles since 2008. I’ve been a photographer for over twenty years since my father presented me with a little camera. On that day I fell in love with photography which has become my hobby forever.

First, after I graduated from the College as a photographer in Murmansk, Russia, I worked as a photo artist in the Murmansk’s Youth Theatre. I created psychological portraits of actors and scenes from the plays. Black-and-white portraits remained a passion of mine for many years.  During that time, photographers were not as common as they are today.

Secondly, when color photography replaced black and white photography about 10 years ago, I began to work as a photographer for the Russian School of Yoga. I was doing both studio and journalism photography. During that time, I was chronicler for all events at the School.

Then, when photography underwent the great change from film to digital, I, like many other photographers, rethought the meaning and role of photography in my life. Photographic equipment became more easily available; and computers replaced photo labs. I asked myself whether it was necessary to continue taking photographs at a time when everyone was able to make photographs. It was a difficult time, but the solution was simple and obvious. Could I aver stop taking pictures? The answer was No.

What is a photographer? Is it the newest gear or the latest version of software? I don’t think so. Seeing is required before anything else. If you don’t see it, you can’t shoot it. A skill is also critical; you may be able to capture something once, but there may not be any consistency in your work. A real photographer can get good results regardless of the hardware.

As I said before, my passion in photography, my love is for people, and my heart is with you in capturing your extraordinary and touching moments.
